Why can't I uninstall/install Java on my computer?

We have found that occasionally customers are unable to uninstall or install Java due to corrupted Java registry files. Microsoft Fix It is a program that you can download onto your computer that will correct or delete these corrupted files and allow you to successfully uninstall/install Java. Please use the below instructions if you are running into this issue.

1. Open a browser and go to http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/

2. Step 1: Do not choose anything from the Select a problem area

3. Step 2: Choose Install or upgrade software or hardware from "What are you trying to do?"

4. Step 3: Either Filter Solutions for "uninstall" or scroll to the "Fix problems with programs that can’t be installed or uninstalled" option and click Run Now

5. This will download Fix It to your computer. Run the install and accept the License Agreement

6. Choose "Detect problems and let me select the fixes to apply"

7. Select either Installing or Uninstalling (depending on your issue) and then select the version of Java you are trying to install or uninstall from the list.

8. Confirm the Uninstall/Install

9. Ensure all of the boxes are checked and click "Next"

10. If the fix is successful you will get the below confirmation window.

Locate "Programs and Features" or "Add or Remove Programs" from your Control Panel to validate whether or not Java was installed or uninstalled. If after trying these steps you are unable to install/uninstall Java, please contact our Non-Integrated Services team at 888.739.3232.

I  uninstalled Java a few days ago, using "install/uninstall" in my control panel. I tried to install a newer version of Java, but continually get error messages (usually 1603). I was also told that the installation was interrupted. The program is no longer listed in my list of programs, but apparently there are still files remaining. I ran the above Microsoft Fixit program to install, but after running Fixit, it still will not install. I also tried to uninstall, but Java isn't listed. When I select "not listed" it responds by asking for a product code, which of course, I don't have. I have tried everything and have rebooted numerous times. I can't get it installed and I can't get it uninstalled. Any ideas?

Good morning Linda!

I apologize for the slow response here.  Are you still experiencing issues?  Beyond the above troubleshooting steps, it may be best if I call you to troubleshoot further.

Thanks,

Jordan

Great question!  There is no charge at all.  While it is nice when we are able to resolve the issue on the Support Center, I think we would benefit from a call given that you have performed numerous troubleshooting steps already.  I am not in the office today, but can email you on Monday to set up a time to call.  Additionally, by calling the number below, you can get this resolved on your own time today.

Thank you for the help, but I did not find KB2918614 on my computer. I looked up what might have caused the problem, and it was either corrupt msi files, or missing msi files. I have a Windows 7 computer, but I can only find XP msi files on the Microsoft website.
