Relatively new to EDI. Wondering if a detailed description of how information is transferred, what transaction numbers entail, and what specific data they can contain could be explained.

Hi John,

Thanks for your post!  Transaction numbers source into your data in certain segments of the EDI.  These transaction numbers are unique for each document you send, so if there was ever an issue or question about a document your buyer or SPS would be able to locate it if given this number. If you are using our WebForms product, these transaction numbers will source into your documents automatically from our system.

As far as how information is transferred, that would depend on the retailer you are working with.  Basically, you would enter information pertaining to your shipments or invoices into one of our forms or an EDI document.  You would then send that transaction to SPS Commerce.  We would run that document through some validation and format the data to fit your trade partner's specifications.   We then transmit that document on to your trading partner.  Please let me know if you have any specific questions regarding this process or the control numbers.  Thank you!
