When completing Grainger ASNs, it would be helpful to enter the 5-digit numerical Grainger SAP Carrier Code instead of typing in the name of the carrier, then immediately typing it again in the next box, Carrier Name.

Most of our shipments for Grainger travel via UPS Freight (30065) or UPS Ground (29811), but when I start typing "UPS..." into the field, it defaults to the first UPS product in the system, which is UPS 2nd Day Air. Then, I have to go back and actually choose the correct UPS product via the drop-down menu, plus type the name again.

It would be faster for me if the list were sorted by Carrier Code instead of by Carrier Name, or at least if it were able to locate the correct carrier name by entering the numeric code into the field, bypassing the drop-down all together.

Hi Christina! There is a feature available in WebForms that should eliminate the need to select a carrier from the drop-down menu. This feature is Setup Lookups and will allow you to either A) Enter a Carrier Name which will automatically source in the SAP Carrier Code field or B) Copy and paste the SAP Carrier Code Number into the drop-down field which will automatically populate the Carrier Name. You can locate Setup Lookups within your Defaults. A complete walkthrough of this feature is available here:

Defaults/Setup Lookups Video

In terms of reorganizing the SAP Carrier Codes to display numerically rather than alphabetically, I will touch base with our Grainger Representative to see if this is a possibility. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, Hannah.

I have done a setup lookup for our most commonly used carriers, so that once it's been chosen in the Carrier Name field, the duplicate data will auto-populate into the SAP Carrier Code field. In all honesty, I feel that the Carrier Name field is superfluous, since the name is already contained within the SAP Carrier Code description, but this solves my problem for the short-term.

I appreciate you checking to see if we could have the codes display numerically. It's not even that they need to display in numerical order within the drop-down, but that it would be advantageous if inputting the numeric code in the SAP Carrier Code box would pull up the correct carrier, just as entering the text name of the truck line. Basically, it would be preferred if the instant search could accommodate input of any part of the line sequence, not just the initial characters, which are the carrier names in this case. Typing a 5 digit numerical sequence is just a bit faster than typing the carrier's name.

Hi Christina! You can actually setup lookups for the SAP Carrier Code Number instead of Carrier Name. That would allow you to paste the number into the SAP Carrier Code Box and it will populate the Carrier Name. That would save you from having to type in any portion of the name!

There's nothing readily available within the ASN or one of our internal documents from which I would copy the code in order to paste it--I just have the oft-used carrier codes memorized. I could type it in to a note field, then copy it and paste it, but that's no faster than just typing in the name initially.

If the field can accommodate a pasted-in number, it seems it should be able to handle a typed number as well.

In the scheme of things, it's really not a big deal--a matter of seconds--it's just nice to be able to tab through documents like that without having to stop at a drop-down.

I agree! I will continue to work with our Grainger Representative and see if we can make any changes to the form, or if there is a business case behind the current structure. Thank you for your continued input!

Good afternoon Christina! Thanks so much for your patience. Our Grainger rep got back to us and advised that the decision to sort alphabetically in the SAP Carrier Code list was ultimately made by Grainger. She does not foresee this changing, but she will let me know if it does in the future. Thanks again for your continued feedback!
