EDI ASN Shipment ID Issues

Hello,

I have been receiving multiple errors when I receive an ASN so I have a couple questions regarding shipment id's within an EDI ASN document. My first question is, can you help clarify what exactly is a shipment id? From what I understand it is a number to help track the package? Next, when a customer creates a ASN through SPS, do they provide you with a shipment id or is that something produced by SPS?

Thanks, hopefully this will clear up some confusion.

Seeing as it has been over two weeks since this initial post I have done some research. However, I still need a bit of clarification on SPS's part to figure out how to solve the issues I am having. Basically what I found was that the Shipment ID is a load number for a PO so that way you can look up the Shipment ID and see all the corresponding items that were sold on the same PO. The problem lies when an item is back ordered. If an item is back ordered it will have a later ship date, in ex. If you have 30 items you are shipping and you ship 29 of them on the 1st and the last one on the 31st you have to create a new A.S.N. for that last item. What is occurring on my end is that when this new A.S.N is created it is receiving a brand new Shipment ID, that is when my program spits it back out saying that "Shipment ID must be unique within a PO". My question still stands, is the Shipment ID provided by SPS? If not, why is it allowing a company to enter multiple Shipment IDs for the same shipment, back ordered or not. I am not well versed in this but this is my general understanding. Hopefully someone can help clarify this.

Thanks,
